Quality assurance in platelet transfusion

Quality assurance procedures have become common in haemotherapy and are intensively regulated by law. They refer to the preparation procedures as well as to the application of blood components. Our department is engaged in research on quality aspects of indication and use of platelets. The use of platelet components is of importance for many currently performed medical procedures. Nevertheless, there is very little information on diagnoses or diagnosis related disease groups of platelet recipients. Therefore, research on this information is a major topic of our work. For the first time, we provided detailed data on diagnoses of platelet recipients as well as of recipients of fresh frozen plasma. A current object of research is the development and characterization of new platelet preparations for topical growth factor therapy.
